Point A: The Athlete as the Feedback Loop for Programming

Louie Simmons was programming a decade before the Soviets published on it. So why isn’t his system enough anymore?

Rereading the Soviet manuals through the lens of programming changes what you see. They used the athlete as the feedback loop. They just never wrote it down.

It’s the invisible gorilla. Count the passes and you miss the gorilla walking across the court. Read the manuals looking for training methods and you miss the programming.

  • Programming is the gorilla. The Soviets gave us max effort, dynamic effort and repeated effort. How they organized those methods sits underneath, unnamed. Training is not programming.

  • Point A is dynamic. Point B is the target, and targets don’t move. Point A shifts with the conditions, so you keep re-aiming. Paul laid this out in his Point A post.

  • Louie was programming before anyone called it that. Years of all-time world records before the science confirmed what he was doing.

Everything starts at Point A. Point A is the athlete’s current physical state. Where they actually are today, before anything is programmed.
