We just got back from the Dominican Republic running Baseball as a Special Strength, and in four or five years of Absolute, this was the first time either of us walked away thinking: that’s a sports scientist.

Most of what gets called sports science is data collection. Numbers on a spreadsheet, this correlates with that. Necessary—but it isn’t knowledge.

Jack Cecil was different. Mid-presentation on our Paul Skenes neurological stagnation case, he was already researching the slide. Afterward he asked whether we wanted it accurate, and two claims came off it on the spot.

The model didn’t change. He removed noise from it. The signal got stronger, and we were still having the same programming conversation—a better version of it.

The line that stopped the room: only athletes at Neurological Point B will stagnate. Without the right model, everything gets called biological accommodation. But a nervous system stagnating and a biology accommodating are different failure states calling for opposite interventions.
