Mark Latash and Vladimir Zatsiorsky both left the Soviet Union before the collapse, and both landed at Penn State. Latash brought Bernstein’s repetition without repetition to the West and built two of the dominant theories in motor control. Zatsiorsky wrote Science and Practice of Strength Training. They shared a building and a handful of publications, but never a unifying theory.
Work down from Latash’s motor control and you end up at the neurological and the biological. Work down from Zatsiorsky’s strength training and you end up in the same place. That middle ground is where programming lives.
On our last day of the Penn State in-service, we assessed an athlete with an abnormal joint capsule in front of Latash. He put his own hands on the hamstring and asked whether it was coming on involuntarily. It was: neurological shielding around abnormal bottom-up biology.
We didn’t get a no...
The backstory is in Penn State, Mark Latash and the UCM Hypothesis.
What We Cover in This Video
The Penn State In-Service: Three days in-season with the football medical and performance staffs, centered not on treatment or training but on programming: the hidden layer, the roadmap that connects Point A to Point B.
Training Questions Are Programming Questions: The neurological-biological asymmetry, the reactive strength deficit, and why knowing the training and treatment isn’t enough.
Three Seconds or Four?: A live programming decision from the Penn State weight room.
Two Pioneers, One Building: How Latash and Zatsiorsky ended up down the hall from each other.
Latash on the Table: An abnormal capsule, a shielding hamstring, and the motor control legend assessing it himself.
The Uncontrolled Manifold, Simplified: Why the same squat never actually happens twice.
Good vs. Bad Variability: What the nervous system stops controlling, and what it should never be fed.
The programming applications of the UCM, where neurological stagnation comes from, and the capsule case are below for paid subscribers.
Kind of the Same, Kind of Different
